The Press Secretary will serve as a key member of a progressive elected office’s communications team, with responsibility for elevating the office’s agenda, leadership, and accomplishments across local, state, and national media. This role is about shaping narratives that resonate with diverse audiences—from community outlets to major publications—and ensuring the office’s work is visible, impactful, and accessible.

This position requires a seasoned communicator who excels at building strong relationships with reporters, editors, and producers across media markets, while crafting compelling stories that highlight how progressive leadership delivers for people and communities. The Press Secretary will collaborate closely with other members of the communications team and senior leadership to amplify the office’s work at every level.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations & Outreach

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and producers across local, state, and national outlets.

  • Proactively pitch stories, interviews, and op-eds that showcase the office’s work as innovative, impactful, and people-centered.

  • Serve as a primary contact for media inquiries, ensuring strategic and timely responses.

  • Go on the record with reporters and serve as a spokesperson when necessary.

Message Development & Storytelling

  • Draft press releases, advisories, talking points, and background materials for a range of media engagement.

  • Shape narratives that translate complex policies and initiatives into compelling stories for broad audiences.

  • Prepare leadership for interviews, editorial board meetings, press conferences, and podcast appearances.

Strategic Visibility

  • Develop and execute a media strategy that ensures consistent coverage across local, state, and national platforms.

  • Monitor and respond to news cycles to insert the office’s perspective into timely discussions.

  • Partner with the digital team to amplify earned media across online and social channels.

Collaboration & Alignment

  • Work closely with communications staff to ensure outreach efforts align with broader messaging goals.

  • Collaborate with policy staff and the communications team to surface stories and data that can be elevated.

  • Provide strategic input to leadership on opportunities for visibility and influence.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in media relations, journalism, political communications, or public affairs.

  • Demonstrated success securing coverage across local, state, or national outlets.

  • Established relationships with reporters, producers, and editors.

  • Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to craft concise, persuasive, and impactful messages.

  • Confident spokesperson, with experience briefing or serving as an on-record contact for press.

  • Strategic thinker who understands media dynamics at all levels and how to insert leadership into conversations that matter.

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion with a passion for amplifying stories that uplift communities.

  • Travel may be required.

Position & Compensation

This is an exempt, at-will position. Salary range: $84,000 - $123,000. Includes benefits. We are an in-person team and value collaboration in our Los Angeles-based office. This role is not remote.
